Why Should I Start Puppy Grooming so Early?

Depending on the breed of your best friend they will be having a visit to the groomers every to 6 to 12 weeks and it’s so important to get them used to the process so they come to us happy and relaxed. The last thing anyone wants is a stressed out pooch.

We like to see puppies at around 12 – 14 weeks for their first visit and then twice more at 3 – 4 week intervals before working up to a full groom. Puppies are like children and they do have limited attention spans and need to learn what is expected from them. As we work with sharp equipment we really need them to be steady on the table in order for us to groom them safely and to the highest possible standards.

What Does a Puppy Groom Consist of?

Well, first of all we try to make it fun and include lots of play with each session. We want My Best Friend Dog Grooming to be a place that they enjoy coming too. That’s so much better for the pup, for you and of course for our team of groomers.

• We limit the first visit to a bath, dry and thorough brush through. If pup is happy and relaxed we may clip his nails and trim his eye stops.
• On the 2nd visit we do the same and include a nail trim and introduce him to the clippers so he gets used to the sound and feel.
• By the time he comes for his 3rd puppy groom we build up to trimming his feet and sanitary area and of course do everything we do as part of his first and second visits.

At My Best Friend Dog Grooming we really understand the importance of creating a calm safe space for puppies to come into. We always work on a 1-2-1 basis and whilst your puppy is with us he is always in the direct care of his appointed groomer. We will never leave your pup in a crate or cage!

We also believe in working collaboratively with our customers and take the time to give you helpful hints and tips about what you can do at home. Here’s a few of the most important ones:

Daily Brushing. Your pup needs to get used to being brushed, he may not like this at first but don’t let him get away with being naughty. Be firm and consistent, if he starts to wriggle or tries to bite the brush (which he will) just pause, wait for him to stop, give him a treat and then continue. He will soon learn that good behavior is rewarded.

Brush him on a table or work top. This takes him away from the areas in which he usually plays so he knows it bushing time and not play time. It also helps him get used to being a a bit higher up which is the same position he will be in on one of our grooming tables.

Use the right tools.  We recommend a steel comb and slicker brush and will take the time to show you how best to use them.
