At this time of year your dog will start shedding their coat ready for the warmer months ahead.
We’re here to give you some simple tips on how to give them a helping hand.

Brushing
Different coat types need different tips and attention. A a white haired dog has fairer skin and is at higher risk of sunburn and a long haired or double coated dog is at risk of overheating and getting heat stroke. Regular brushing is essential for the warm summer months and is the easiest way of keeping your dogs’ coat and skin healthy. Even the shorter haired breeds benefit from a regular brush to remove their dead coat. Brushing your dogs’ coat can help stimulate distribute natural oils which in turn can help reduce shedding. It’s also a great way the check for fleas and ticks which become more active as the weather gets warmer.
Bathing
Summer is when dogs are typically rolling around in the grass and dirt and environmental allergens start to cause reactions and skin irritations. Bathing with a high quality natural shampoo can help remove these from your dogs’ coat and skin. Bathing should not be an every day activity but done on a weekly basis can help keep your dogs coat in great condition. Just remember that wet fur can get tangled so be sure to brush these out as part of the drying process.
Watch out for Grass Seeds
From June onwards it’s grass seed season here in the UK! These tiny, sharp-edged seeds are found in a variety of places, whether that be in the woods or a dog field or even from a Foxtail. Keep an eye on your dogs’ paws, between the pads, underarms and groin as well as his ears.
Paws
As the weather starts to heat up pavements and other hard surfaces can become very hot very quickly! By taking your dog on walks in the cooler times of the day can help prevent burnt pads. You can also use paw balm to give that extra protection and help prevent their pads from cracking.
Ears
Ear infections are very common in the summer especially for those adventurous dogs who love to swim. They can become prone to swimmer’s ear and other ear infections, this is more of an issue with dogs that have droopy ears. Make a point to check their ears regularly and gently wipe them after they’ve been for a dip. If there are any sign of redness or a yeasty smell, book in to see your local vets!
